Japan, TEPCO target earlier schedule for removal of Fukushima plant's melted fuel

The removal of the melted fuel at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan may begin within the first half of fiscal 2020, about a year and a half earlier than an initial target, according to the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power. "How much time we need to take out the fuel debris hinges on the situation of the fuel. Our basic policy is to accelerate such work as much as possible, but we are not moving up the goal of spending 30-40 years," said an official with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
