Safeway selling Canada operations to Empire

Safeway has inked a deal to sell its Canada operations, which include 213 full-service stores, to Empire Co., parent of the Sobeys chain. The $5.7 billion sale will include 62 fuel stations, four distribution centers and about 200 in-store pharmacies. The deal makes Sobeys Canada's second-biggest supermarket chain behind Loblaw; both companies face growing competition for Canadians' grocery dollars from Wal-Mart Canada and Target.
