Not all nondairy products are created equal

Newer nondairy milk options are giving consumers many options beyond the traditional choice of soy, rice or almond beverages. However, many of these products are highly processed and have added ingredients that may aggravate digestive problems in people with irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease, according to dietitian Tamara Duker Freuman, who specializes in gastrointestinal issues. She said some plant-based milks also are not especially healthy because they often include lots of added sugar.
