Health insurer encourages patients to split pills, save money

UnitedHealthcare, the nation's second-largest health insurer, is encouraging people to cut pills in half as a means of saving money for themselves and their employers' health plans. Double-strength pills do not cost much more than single-strength pills, so savings are substantial, but an official at Pfizer warns the nature of some pills could be changed by splitting and storing them.
