European companies strive to salvage summer travel season

Hotels, government tourism agencies, car rental companies and other travel-related businesses are ramping up efforts to attract Americans despite the weak dollar, dismal economic outlook and soaring air fares. Americans' visits to Europe are down as much as 5% this year compared with 2007. "It's going to be tough, so we have to try harder," said Jean-Philippe Pérol, chairman of the European Travel Commission.
