Senate panel to look at improving U.S. foreign language capabilities

A U.S. Senate committee will hear testimony Thursday on ways to improve the ability of federal agencies to understand and translate foreign languages. A lack of emphasis on language instruction in U.S. schools, the frequent change in language focus and the increasing amount of intelligence data being gathered are among the problems, which experts and officials say are systemic and may be affecting national security.
