CDC: Flu season led to more adult hospitalizations, child deaths

The 2012-2013 flu season, which started and peaked earlier than usual, claimed the lives of at least 149 children, up from the usual range of 34 to 123 pediatric deaths, CDC officials said Thursday. More than 50% of all reported flu-related hospitalizations involved individuals ages 65 and older, the highest proportion since the agency began gathering flu hospitalization data in 2005-2006. The findings appear in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
