GWEC: World leaders need to focus on renewable energy

Governments must lessen tax supports to fossil fuels to address climate change, according to the Global Wind Energy Council. Countries are "subsidizing carbon dioxide emissions to the tune of $110 per ton" so cutting tax supports to fossil fuels "could take us a long way toward protecting the climate," Steve Sawyer, the organization's secretary-general, said in a statement. The wind energy sector could generate 1,000 gigawatts of installed capacity by 2020 and reduce emissions by 9 billion tons annually, the group said.
