Last phase of light-frame steel building seismic-safety test begins

Researchers from U.S. and Canadian universities and steel industry design professionals have started the final phase of a "three-year project to increase seismic safety of buildings using light-frame steel construction." A range of computational models has already been developed to test how the buildings react to seismic events. "This project has already resulted in several innovations that will immediately impact seismic cold-formed steel design standards, making buildings safer," said the study's lead researcher, Benjamin Schafer, a member of the civil engineering department at Johns Hopkins University.
