Researchers tracked more than 2,400 injection drug users in Thailand and found that daily intake of the antiviral drug tenofovir was associated with an almost 49% lower risk of HIV infection. Patients who most closely adhered to the prescribed regimen benefited the most from tenofovir's protective effect. The findings were reported in The Lancet.
