Aventis chief says Sanofi-Aventis merger will create strong combination

Chief Executive Igor Landau told a shareholder meeting the merger would be challenging, but the "opportunities are much bigger than the risks," adding it is too early to say when the two companies would be fully combined. Landau said he had thought a hostile offer like that from Sanofi was impossible because it didn't make sense, but he accepted it as an "easy choice" because it was improved from the initial offer and some shareholders had not completely backed the idea of Aventis going it alone.
