Bioengineering work shows promise for paraplegics

California researchers have achieved some success with a paraplegic patient by implanting electrodes in the membrane that envelops the spinal cord. The experimental work by Joel Burdick, a California Institute of Technology professor of mechanical engineering and bioengineering, has helped paraplegic volunteer Rob Summers achieve greater lower-body control, including some movement and muscle growth in his legs.
