Research reveals the cloud has big effect on energy use

Cloud technology can cut energy use related to software in data centers by 87%, according Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory research, because it allows for server consolidation and greater efficiency of resources. "If all U.S. business users shifted their e-mail, productivity software and [customer-relationship-management] software to the cloud, the primary energy footprint of these software applications might be reduced by as much as 87% or 326 petajoules," the researchers said.
