RIAA extends platinum, gold status to ringtones

The Recording Industry Association of America said it would classify top-selling Master Ringtones, or tones that use actual music and vocals from artists' work, as having achieved platinum or gold status. Steve Largent, president and CEO of CTIA-The Wireless Association, praised the RIAA's decision to extend its system beyond traditional music sales, saying that "wireless and music are a natural and historic fit." Largent added that he believes the "marriage of technology and art has the potential to bridge cultural divides and bring peoples of the world together like few inventions before it."
