NIH far more apt to fund Ph.D.s over M.D.s

Investigators with a Ph.D. are much more likely to get NIH funding than are M.D.s, according to a longitudinal, comparative study of 40 years' worth of applications and grant awards by the NIH. The researchers suggested that the trend could be reversed if medical centers began nurturing and encouraging physician-scientists and offered them mentors and training.
