Caterpillar reducing Illinois staff to cut labor costs

Caterpillar has been laying off workers in its home state of Illinois while it transfers production to lower-cost states such as Texas and Arkansas. The equipment manufacturer laid off an undisclosed number of employees last week in Pontiac, Ill. Caterpillar has also reduced its labor costs by 2% since 2004 by gaining concessions from union workers.
