GAO says taxpayers need more help on real estate deductions

The Internal Revenue Services needs to give taxpayers better instructions on how to properly claim their real estate tax deductions, the Government Accountability Office said. Tax bills from local governments and documents provided by mortgage servicers rarely, if ever, indicate which items are deductible and which are not, the GAO said.
