Providers, insurers work to avert medical identity theft

More than a quarter of a million U.S. residents are victims of medical identity theft each year and many people may not find out about it for months or years. Health care providers and insurers are taking more precautions, such as asking people for additional forms of ID at appointments and using software to screen for spikes in claims.
