A cheap rubberized-plastic seal has been implicated in the BP oil-rig disaster and a recent Marcellus Shale gas-well explosion, writes Kent Moors in this column. That's potentially a big problem for Marcellus Shale production, since gas-pressure levels in the region have "consistently been higher than anticipated. Greater pressure increases how much gas is coming out of the ground (a good thing for operating companies and their investors), but it also ups the safety risks and concerns," Moors writes.
