MasterCard sues FIFA to retain World Cup sponsorship rights

MasterCard is the 2006 World Cup's official financial services company, but whether it continues in that role next year and beyond is likely to be resolved in court: FIFA, soccer's organizing body, has inked a new eight-year, $200 million deal with rival Visa International to become the financial services sponsor beginning in 2007; however, MasterCard has filed a federal lawsuit to stop the new deal, saying it has the right to extend its own sponsorship pact.
