FDA mandates boxed warning for conventional antipsychotics

The FDA announced Monday that older antipsychotics, including thorazine and prolixin, will carry boxed warnings based on data showing that the drugs raise the risk of death when used off-label to treat behavioral symptoms in elderly dementia patients. "This is something we hope [medical providers] would discuss with the families and caregivers so they can understand that there are risks to using these drugs," an FDA official said.
