Lawsuits focus on highways' role in water pollution

State officials concerned about the water quality in their lakes and rivers increasingly are turning their attention to a common source of pollution: highways. Chemical-laden runoff from highways is considered a major source of water pollution, and interest groups are filing lawsuits to force state highway departments to pay greater attention to the issue. Among the solutions: porous shoulders and medians that help filter pollutants from the water before it enters storm drains.
