Dubai's 1,070-foot tower claims best-building award in region for 2011

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has awarded Foster + Partners' Index Tower in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, its prize for the best building in the Middle East and Africa. The mixed-use skyscraper features a tricky combination of heat-reducing elements and design that lets light permeate throughout. Overhangs shade the 80-story structure, while narrow facades on the east and west sides keep heat from the low, hot sun at bay.
