The average child born last year will cost a middle-class family nearly $300,000 over the next 17 years, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The estimate includes costs such as housing, food, education and child care. Meanwhile, more families are putting money into prepaid 529 plans to lock in college tuition prices, Financial Research Corp. reports. Contributions to the plans increased 2.6% during the first quarter of 2012.
