Fla. district reports steady rise in free, reduced-price meals

In Alachua County, Fla., public schools, 52.96% of the student population qualifies for free and reduced-price meals -- the highest percentage in the district's history. Officials say they only expect growth in the subsidized meal program to continue to rise steadily. "It's going to get worse before it gets better," said Debbie Mason, president and CEO of United Way of North Central Florida and member of the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce's board of trustees.
