Manufacturing numbers are muted, but U.S. consumers express optimism

The latest U.S. consumer sentiment reading indicates that spirits remain near a post-2007 high. However, manufacturing output rose only 0.1% in May after two straight months of decline. With consumer spending up only slightly in the current quarter, the outlook for further gains is cloudy.
