Cat behavior can baffle owners, but veterinarians offer reassurance that some activity that may seem strange is completely normal, while other issues might signal a medical problem. Cats seem to enjoy smelly objects because they are stimulated by chemical messages in the odor, and scratching serves a mix of purposes including communication and limb conditioning. Urinating outside the litter box, however, could signal a more serious issue that should not be punished.
