Maternal mental illness often begins earlier than postpartum period

New research indicates that postpartum depression begins during pregnancy in many cases and can present at any time during the first year following birth. The range of maternal mental illness is more varied than is commonly recognized, researchers say, and between 1 in 8 and 1 in 5 new mothers may exhibit signs of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety or bipolar disorder.
