MedPAC report calls for extension of primary care bonus

A Medicare Payment Advisory Commission report said the 10% bonus payment to primary care physicians should be continued after 2015 but changed from a claims' add-on to a per beneficiary sum awarded monthly or annually. The report said a per beneficiary payment would encourage care coordination for patients, as opposed to the fee-for-service payment method, which emphasizes volume and is not suited for primary care.
