Twitter defers maintenance to keep watch in Iran

Microblogging network Twitter is putting off what co-founder Biz Stone described as "a critical network upgrade" in order to remain live and online during the protests in the aftermath of the disputed election in Iran. The U.S. State Department requested Twitter remain online to allow users in Iran to continue posting updates about demonstrations and government response. Twitter does not support Farsi-language characters, and tweets emanating from Iran tend to be in English -- and it's unclear if Iranians are getting news via the microblogging service in great numbers.
