Activity in home construction declines:

The residential housing market is showing few signs of growth, according to government statistics. Construction of houses and apartments dropped 10% in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 593,000, according to the Commerce Department, while April's rate was revised downward to 659,000. Applications for building permits fell 5.9% last month to an annual rate of 574,000, the lowest level in a year.
