Do Dawn's contributions to help clean the oily birds matter?

Dawn dishwashing liquid is the cleaning product of choice for people working to save oil-soaked birds along the Gulf coast, writes Leslie Kaufman. And the brand is taking advantage of its moment in the spotlight, offering to donate a dollar to the cleanup effort for each bottle it sells, Kaufman notes. Not everyone is convinced that scrubbing birds is actually effective, but one former business school professor says it's a symbolically important move. "Washing these oiled, injured birds is an act of contrition, a demonstration of concern and an expression of hope," wrote C.V. Harquail in her blog.
