Oberstar, Costello propose re-regulation of airline industry

Two leading aviation experts in the House of Representatives are threatening to re-regulate the airline industry if the Justice Department approves the proposed merger between United Airlines and Continental Airlines. "I'm looking for a way to preserve competition," says Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., who voted in favor of deregulation in 1978, near the start of his political career. Along with Rep. Jerry Costello, D-Ill., Oberstar is now proposing legislation that would subject airline fares to scrutiny by a federal board.
