Smaller lights, whether electric or solar-powered, can spruce up a landscape when placed along paths, up steps and in flower beds, writes Jason Gurskis, a New Jersey home improvement contractor. Solar lights are the easiest to install and cost as little as $3.50 each. Low-voltage electric lights have more wattage and provide more illumination than solar lights and generally start at $30. Kits include all the parts with an instruction booklet, and pieces can be bought individually but require more planning, Gurskis notes.
