Al Jazeera America sees "long-format news" as key to its brand

Al Jazeera America, when it launches this summer, hopes to separate itself from the competition by focusing on "fact-based, in-depth, long-format news" and airing fewer than half of the number of commercials shown on rival networks, according to Al Jazeera Media Network's Ehab Al Shihabi. The commercial pledge is made possible by backing from the Qatar government. "Our intention, compared to Fox and CNN, isn't to maximize shareholder value," Al Shihabi said. "And that is the difference that will allow us to maintain our journalistic identity."
