Canadian educators note the importance of music instruction

Proposed cuts to school music programmes in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, should be reconsidered as the benefits of a music education can be seen in areas such as maths achievement, and to help students who aren't strong in athletics, for example, find opportunities to succeed, says Allan Reid, director of the charity MusiCounts. "This is simply about creating a far more well-rounded society... One that has the benefits of music education, which teaches you teamwork, it teaches you discipline and it's proven to make you better at math," Reid adds.
