Physicists improving precision of atomic clocks

Physicists are working to develop a more exact atomic clock using laser light, rather than microwaves, to keep extremely precise time, which is key to operating modern technologies such as GPS, broadcast transmitters and mobile phone networks. Scientists suggest the new atomic clock will be about 100 times more accurate than current clocks, and ultrashort laser pulses can be used to synchronize the world's atomic clocks. Scientists expect to use the new atomic clock to test and prove Einstein's theory of general relativity using satellite-based experiments, as well as create more accurate GPS navigation systems.
