Slideshow: New Orleans' $615M hurricane-protection project breaks ground

Work has started on the long-delayed project "to build permanent storm surge gates and pumps" at New Orleans' 17th Street Canal station. The nearly $615 million project will feature three pump stations and will be built by the joint venture PCCP Constructors, which includes Kiewit Louisiana Co., the M. R. Pittman Group and Traylor Bros. The New Orleans District office of the Army Corps of Engineers will oversee the project.
