Study explores how visual cues affect language learning

Individuals who are trying to learn a second language might impede their progress by viewing images that remind them of home, according to a recent study of Chinese students living in the U.S. Researchers found that such images prompted students to use traditional Chinese linguistic structures when describing objects. For example, students who viewed the images were more likely to call a pistachio a "happy nut" -- the literal Chinese translation of the word. The findings suggest that culture immersion is an effective way to learn a second language.
