Tips for landing that first academic job

Graduate students applying for an associate professor position need great recommendations and a clear, concise curriculum vitae, according to William Helmreich, sociology professor at City College of the City University of New York. Search committees want candidates with some teaching experience, especially if they can fill a niche, Helmreich writes in this commentary. Candidates also should take time to network with current faculty, he advises. "You can never know what little detail or nuance will give you the edge over other applicants," he writes.
