In Australia secondary schools that are models of science education, students are active learners and "science teachers have a discipline-specific tertiary degree," notes Alan Finkel, chancellor of Monash University. In this commentary, Finkel writes about the Science & Technology Education Leveraging Relevance programme, in which students initially are taught about a motivational topic, such as the surface of Mars, as an introduction to other scientific topics -- taught through problem-based learning.
