Xcel Energy to spend $1.8B for Minn. plant upgrades

Xcel Energy is investing in upgrades to its Prairie Island and Monticello nuclear plants in Minnesota. About $1.8 billion will be allocated for work that includes the replacement of two steam generators and a capacity boost. "What we are facing here is a lot of spending to extend life another 20 years," said Laura McCarten, Xcel regional vice president.
