An analysis of 2010 U.S. Veterans Health Administration records found that many patients, particularly those over 65, who were prescribed psychotropic drugs lacked a psychiatric diagnosis or other documented medical indications. Out of 1.85 million veterans, 33% filled a prescription for a psychotropic drug, and only 53% of the patients who received those drugs received mental health services. The findings appeared in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.
