House panel unanimously votes against label money

The House Appropriations agriculture subcommittee barred the USDA from working on country-of-origin labels for meat. The country-of-origin labels, which are voluntary but scheduled to become mandatory on Sept. 30, 2004, are meant to help inform consumers where fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood and peanuts sold in grocery stores are produced.
