Free checking loses its luster for banks

In a bid to recover from recent losses and the costs of greater regulation, Bank of America and others are planning to raise revenue by eliminating free checking accounts for consumers who generate minimal activity. Banks post losses on more than half the checking accounts they maintain, according to a new report by Celent.
