Senators indicate likely approval for United-Continental merger

The top executives of Continental Airlines and United Airlines continued to make the rounds on Capitol Hill on Thursday, telling senators that their proposed merger would keep them "financially viable" in an increasingly globalized aviation market. Several key lawmakers indicated that the merger was likely to win approval. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said she is personally opposed to the merger, but that Congress should not intervene in the regulatory process. Meanwhile, Sen. John D. Rockefeller, D-W.Va., said he supports further consolidation if it "creates the conditions not only to survive, but also to thrive in a competitive global industry."
