Survey: Benefits of Sarbanes-Oxley are seen as outweighing costs

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act was enacted about eight years ago, and its merits have been debated ever since. Protiviti, a consulting firm, has released a survey that found 70% of respondents said the benefits of the Sarbanes-Oxley accounting controls outweigh their costs. "What was once a compliance 'burden' for many companies, managed in an ad hoc or project manner and at a high cost, has evolved into something broader than its original objective," said Bob Hirth of Protiviti.
