U.S. deepwater-drilling ban will proceed

The federal government's six-month deepwater-drilling ban should not be lifted because it ensures public safety, according to court documents filed by U.S. regulators. This comes in response to several offshore service and supply companies, which filed a legal challenge asking a federal court to undo the moratorium. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's move "was a valid exercise of his discretion predicated on the need to ensure that no further drilling accidents occur pending review and implementation of safety protocols and procedures," said lawyers for the Interior Department.
