Researchers increasingly believe that caffeine might inhibit creativity because the jolt of additional focus that it provides inevitably reduces the mind's ability to wander and find new connections between concepts. Caffeine also makes it harder to sleep deeply, robbing creative types of the REM sleep that enables the brain to process information into new ways of thinking. "While caffeine has numerous benefits, it appears that the drug may undermine creativity more than it stimulates it," writes Maria Konnikova.
