Hadoop adoption surges as more companies tackle data management

Distributed computing platform Hadoop began in the mid-2000s as a tool for "processing the sort of data sets we were getting crawling the Web," said creator Doug Cutting. To Cutting's surprise, competitors failed to materialize and Hadoop adoption is increasing by 60% each year as businesses look for ways to manage huge data sets. The next step for Hadoop is to add tools for heavily regulated industries such as government and finance, Cutting said.
